There are a few airline options to choose from within Canada and it’s sometimes tough to know whether an airline is a good fit for you and your travel needs. On a recent trip to Peru, I flew with Air transat and was curious to see how it compared to other airlines. Known for its budget-friendly international flights, Air transat has a strong presence in leisure travel. Overall, I was pleased with my experience. About Air Transat
Air transat has been around since 1986 and made its inaugural flight on November 14, 1987, travelling from Montreal to Acapulco. The airline is based out of Montreal, Quebec and travels from 19 Canadian cities to various vacation destinations including 15 destinations in the south during winter and 11 European destinations during summer. Wander Woman Travel Magazine is not the only company to do an Air transat review. The airline was also voted 2024 World’s Best Leisure Airline by passengers at the Skytrax World Airline Awards, a very promising sign for Air transat!
Air Transat Check-In and Booking Process
Air transat offers online check-in up to 24 hours before your departure. There are three fare options to pick from in economy, Eco Budget, Eco Standard, and Eco Flex. Eco Budget allows only a personal item and you are unable to make changes or cancellations to this fare. Eco Standard allows changes or cancellations for a fee and your carry-on baggage is included in the fare with flights to Europe, Africa, and Peru allowing a free checked bag. Eco Flex allows free changes and cancellations, included carry-on and checked baggage, and seat selection.
If you’re wanting a more luxurious flight experience you can also book the Club Class, which includes gourmet meals, seats in the Club Class cabin that offers more comfort, priority check-in and priority boarding.

As we boarded the aircraft, we noticed an elderly woman traveling with her daughter who was confused and was refusing to walk on the Air transat plane. Her daughter had pulled her aside and was trying to talk her into getting onto the plane. After the other passengers boarded, a midlle aged male flight attendant stepped out of the door and talked to both of them. The woman was 90 years old and she had traveled to Canada to visit family. She was a little confused and was frightened to walk onto the plane. The flight attendant smiled at her and said “Dance with me?” Then he held both of her hands and danced her down the aisle to her seat, which happened to be directly in front of ours. It was one of the sweetest and kindest things I’ve seen a flight attendant do to help a passenger in distress. She managed fairly well on the flight after that.
Club Class or Economy Class?
We decided to fly in economy class so I can’t speak to whether or not Club Class is worth upgrading for. If you desire a more luxurious travelling experience, then it might be a good upgrade for you. I was impressed with our experience in economy class. We decided to purchase the Option Plus upgrade that you can purchase during online check-in up to 24 hours before your flight. Option Plus gives you an extra bag, priority services like you would get in Club Class, onboard perks such as a comfort kit, earbuds, an alcoholic beverage, and an extra snack. These extra perks were nice to have.
In Flight Comfort and Amenities
With the regular economy fare, you still get meals included on the longer flights and the meals are good. There are televisions on the seat backs to watch tv and movies which is always nice to have, especially on a longer flight. The seats are your typical airplane seats so we had no complaints there. The service from the flight attendants was friendly and all in all, we felt welcomed and comfortable on this flight.
Air Transat Reviews from other Passengers: Is Air Transat Worth it?
As with any airline, you can sometimes encounter travel problems such as delays or cancellations and it’s not always in the airline’s control. I sought out other people’s Air Transat reviews and found that like many other airlines, it was a mixed bag of positive and negative reviews. Some people were very happy with the airline and stated they always choose Air Transat, while others had a bad experience with flight delays and customer service.
Air Transat Customer Service – Lost reading Glasses
I lost my prescription reading glasses on the flight to Peru. They fell out of my carry-on bag when I was digging through it looking for some headphones. The glasses were in a small black case and were difficult to see under the dark seats. I contacted Air transat customer service and placed a lost and found request, but the glasses were never recovered. They were prompt with their emails and contacted me several times to report that they were still looking for my lost glasses. Eventually they closed the request when the glasses were not found. Air Transat Review Final Verdict: Summing up the Air Transat Experience
All in all, our roundtrip flight to Peru was a success with Air transat. The extra amenities through purchasing the Option Plus plan made economy a little extra comfortable and I appreciated the attentive and friendly staff on the flight. I was really touched watching the flight attendant dance down the aisle with a fellow passenger to ease her worry and distress.
